A bit of information about and links to a some other interesting webpages and projects.
“Stockport Hydro is a renewable energy scheme comprising twin Archimedes screw turbines on the river Goyt. We have been generating clean, green electricity for a couple of years now.
We are very fortunate to have a team of dedicated volunteers who maintain the plant on a rota basis, between them making daily visits to the site to clear the trash screen of any debris which has been drawn towards the plant from the river. We have retrieved all sorts from the river, from telephone box cash boxes (empty unsurprisingly!) to pieces of wood later transformed into works of art by one of our volunteers.
Our scheme is overseen by a board of directors who are also volunteers and bring a wealth of expertise, making sure the scheme is running properly from both an operational and financial perspective – we still have a mortgage to pay! Our share issue remains open in order to raise funds to repay our mortgage early, and we recently paid our members a modest interest payment of 4%. Hopefully, we will be able to distribute some of our profits to environmental projects in Stockport soon.”
