In early June, James Wood, an avid and knowledgeable forager, was invited back by Transition Wilmslow to guide enthusiastic participants in a foraging journey through Carrs Park. The event was open to adults and children interested in learning about the variety of wild, edible and useful plants growing in the local environment. Everyone had the opportunity to see, touch and taste the plants, with James providing details on how to identify edible vs. non-edible varieties. The novice and experienced foragers tasted a wide selection of in-season plants such as cow’s parsley, shoots from the trunk of linden trees, pineapple weed, bulrush stalks, fireweed, pine pollen, to name just a few.
James also shared his creative ideas for recipes, using the plants to make jams, cordials, syrups, soups, flavoured salts, fermentations, crisps, cake decorations, teas and a whole lot more. With wild garlic coming to the end of its season, James shared his homemade wild garlic cream cheese and other spreads flavoured with foraged plants with the participants in a picnic finale.
